Morrison’s header brings bad tidings for McLeish

Birmingham City lost ground on Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers
thanks to a goal by their former striker Clinton Morrison but were
controversially denied an equaliser they probably deserved.

Peter Bills: Talking rugby

Jerry Collins is 28 years old today. It seems absurdly young to pen an
obituary of an outstanding career.

Green Dragon’s success comes at a price

Fourth on the water but third highest points scorer, Ireland’s Green Dragon,
skippered by British double Olympic medallist Ian Walker and partnered by
China, took over the third-placed spot overall after finishing the opening
leg of the Volvo round the world race yesterday. There was a price.

Sky is the limit for high-flyer Hamilton

In all the inevitable hoopla that surrounded Lewis Hamilton’s dramatic World Championship success in one of the greatest showdowns in Formula One history at Interlagos on Sunday, when he became the 30th and youngest-ever title holder, there is one fascinating little statistic that demonstrates just how stratospheric his career can become. He might share with Jacques Villeneuve the distinction of winning the World Championship in only his second season, but he is the only man ever to miss a title by a single point and then win the next by the same margin in his first two seasons of competition. And he will only get better.

Martins lifts Newcastle but Barton’s troubles continue

With a burst of noise that could be heard 12 miles away on Wearside, Newcastle United last night booted themselves loudly off bottom place in the Premier League and up to 14th. Joe Kinnear contributed so much to the rising volume that he lost his voice and could not speak afterwards. The win means Newcastle are above Sunderland on goal difference, and while leaving the relegation zone was hardly a detail, the sense of pleasure on Tyneside at local superiority was audible.

Racing has always attracted tricksters and conmen

Who would be foolish enough to subscribe to a tipping service? Surely, any tipster who could rake in the winnings at the rate that D&E Associates claimed in its advertisements should be bronzing themselves in the Bahamas and not flogging “inside information” to the public.

Trump gets his course, plus 500 luxury homes

Soon after Donald J Trump submitted his plans for a £1bn golf resort on an unspoilt stretch of the Aberdeenshire coast, he made clear that he expected officialdom’s approval. With characteristic bluntness, the property billionaire told an interviewer: “I’m going to get it.”

Nicholls revels in Kauto Star’s restoration

That cocksure comeback from Kauto Star at Down Royal on Saturday has certainly put a spring in his trainer’s step. What, for instance, did Paul Nicholls make of Tidal Bay’s reappearance at Carlisle the next day? Well, Howard Johnson would be pleased. And the horse could only beat what was put in front of him. But Tidal Bay still had “a mountain to climb”, Nicholls asserts, if he was going to concern Kauto Star, or indeed Master Minded.

‘I tried my best to the end’ insists Glock after fateful finish

Timo Glock said Lewis Hamilton won the world drivers’ championship by his own skills shown throughout the season and not because of the German’s tyre choice for the final laps of the Brazilian Grand Prix. Glock opted to stay on dry-weather tyres as light rain fell in the closing stages of Sunday’s race and, though he did not lose too much time initially, the final lap proved crucial as Hamilton passed him in the last few hundred metres to give the Briton the fifth place he needed.

James Lawton: Italians quick to see through Mourinho’s threadbare clothes

Jose Mourinho is feeling heat in Italy, more certainly, than at any point in his long and frequently orgiastic relationship with the English media. Perhaps not to the total surprise of some of us, though, there are a few shrewd judges who believe that quite a bit of the pressure and anger has been generated, with delicious irony, by the Special One himself.

Radcliffe aims for second child before London 2012

Twenty four hours on from her own marathon victory on these shores, the
Marathon Mom was planning to stick around to see how the Hockey Mom might
fare in hers. "We don’t leave New York until Wednesday so we will be
here to see the election," Paula Radcliffe said, with reference to the
protracted US Presidential race which features Sarah Palin as John McCain’s
Republican running mate and which hits its finishing stretch at the polls
today.

Tait adds to Johnson’s troubles

The whole point of the new multimillion pound agreement between the Rugby
Football Union and the Premiership clubs was to give Martin Johnson, the
England manager and principal selector, everything he needed – clarity,
continuity, oodles of time with his elite players – to re-establish the red
rose army as the best international team in the game. Best laid plans, and
all that. Yesterday, Johnson lost two more first-choice players to injury,
and will therefore contest this weekend’s match with the Pacific Islands at
Twickenham with a team very different to the one he envisaged at the start
of October.

Once you have your vision and plan in place you are faced with implementation

Once you have your vision and plan in place you are faced with implementation. Every parent understands the daily challenges of raising a child as life speeds by us like a NASCAR race. In my own life it is here in the daily battle that I have discovered the importance of accountability. My wife is the best intentional parent I know. She made a decision early in the lives of our children (Nicole is 14 and Emily is 11) to empower her friends to hold her accountable in her role as an intentional mother. As a result, when inertia begins to pull her away from intentional parenting her friends remind her of the vision, the plan and of what hangs in the balance. This accountability enables her to course correct and to escape falling out of the habit of intentional parenting. Who have you allowed into the center of your life to ask you the difficult questions and to challenge you to be an intentional parent?
